Flour and Fire

I have challenged myself to do some study  so I can use my camera on some manual settings this year, and start to better understand the multitude of buttons and settings it has. I have managed to take some good pictures in the last few years with very little knowledge so imagine how dangerous I could be...

The Shady Baker, Jane at work

An invitation arrived from the lovely and talented Jane from The Shady Baker to attend her annual Flour and Fire at her home. On offer was the chance to learn the basics of sourdough and hands on bread making as well as making beeswax candles with Zara from Zaranne Handmade.

ready for some baking and making action

A perfect photo taking opportunity as well as lots of fun and new friends...

beautiful homemade happiness by Zara

The swap table. We all contributed something home grown or homemade
then got to take treasures home

beautiful morning tea that greeted us on our arrival

me hard at work creating sourdough bread

Summa from one of my favourite haunts, The Caff, working on her day off to create pasta

this was our goal...these beautiful loaves of crusty goodness
it was like an Insta-meet or a bloggers convention, maybe both! Poised ready for bread action Zara, Sophie, @shell_mcclure (and me!) plus partners and friends who have not heard the call of social media!
lunch...it was good!

making beeswax candles. So much fun

What a wonderful day with great food, new friends and skills, goodies from the swap table and lots of photographic practise under my belt.

Do you wrangle with the manual settings? Do you use your phone? Hands up who remembers the days of film and dodgy school excursion photos when you recorded every detail in wonderful blurry glory!

  1. Beautifully captured Kate! I loved how when things get busy other talented photographers capture so many little moments and details. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and support.

Since you asked...I have been shooting 100% manual for a few years. If ever I switch back to automatic I am disappointed with the bland colours and overall brightness. It is very much trial and error but I constantly tweak my shutter speed and ISO. Occasionally I adjust the aperture. I would love some professional help with nigh time/low light photography. Happy snapping x

    1. You do it so well Jane. Your photos are lovely. I have always had trouble understanding the relationship between the different setting (maths brain!?) but I will persevere. PS if, by support, you mean eating then you are most welcome :P xx

  4. What a fun looking day and the food looks delicious. I need to work on using manual too. I just can't get what I want from it however I think a new camera might help with that.

    1. I think through sheer laziness I have learnt some tricks to compensate for my lack of manual understanding! !

  6. I love sourdough! Not sure I'd be bothered to make it myself though. Great foodie photos :)

  7. Oh you've captured the day perfectly Kate. It was lovely meeting you.
It made me giggle when all the bloggers had their cameras in one hand, phone in the other snapping away. All our collated photos would make an amazing book I'm sure.

    1. Thank you Zara. I couldn't resist turning the lens on the paparazzi instead of the action at one point! It made me giggle too xx

  8. I've loved seeing the Flour and Fire day on other's blogs this year and also on Instagram. I was glad to see that photo of everyone with their cameras and phones, I imaged that's what a group of bloggers baking would look like!
I've been using my DSLR on manual for over 12 months now and loving it...just the other day I mastered a new technique that had been frustrating me for ages, such a good feeling!

Lovely to discover your blog, I'm off to have a look around it,

  10. Gorgeous photos Kate! So lovely to see the day through your eyes! And I just had to giggle, look at us all poised ready to capture that bread! Love it! There must be a term for a group of bloggers, a mob perhaps! So lovely to meet you on Sunday. Look forward to catching up again when we are back up your way. Love Sophie x

    1. Thank you Sophie. I too wondered if there was a collective noun for groups of bloggers ?! I think meeting will certainly add a new and richer layer to your blog when I read along now. Looking forward to the next installment xx
