Umbrellas up...

source

I love the smell of rain on the dry ground, I love the sound of rain on a tin roof, I love the feeling of anticipation as a storm builds.

It rained here last week. We don't have many rainy days and often our yearly rainfall comes in short, loud storms rather than with the gentle pitter patter on our roofs. This time we got to savour the wetness, shake off the cobwebs and unfurl our umbrellas, use our windscreen wipers.

my wet street

Rain makes me remember playing in the mud, wearing rubber boots and walking to the dam to see if there was water running in, watching little gutters fill to become rivers where we pretended to fish, playing 'Swallows and Amazons' with my brothers in a little swamp outside the garden fence.

A treasure from the family album! (1979)

Even though I live in 'town' now and rain means time cooped up inside with little people at work and home, I can't help being excited or checking to see how much rain there has been. My garden loves it but the sight of so much water running down the street when someone would give anything to catch a little of it does make me feel a bit sad. One of my favourite saying is

"anyone who thinks sunshine is
pure happiness
has never danced in the rain"

Are you a weather watcher? How does rain make you feel?

Happy Sunday xx

  1. i'm english so genetically pre-disposed to be a fervent weather watcher. we don't (usually) get lots of rain here on the east coast of nz, so when it happens, especially when it is prolonged i am in heaven and partial to getting completely soaked! lovely to read this x

  3. I think people who don't watch the weather must almost be dead, right!? The rain was so lovely. Look at you go in 1979...that must be an all-in-one raincoat? I love the rain on your window with the autumn colour too! x
